Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment

Salicylic acidOne of the most common over the counter remedies for acne is salicylic acid acne treatment. It is used to eliminate both whiteheads and blackheads and to deter outbreaks of acne. Salicylic acid has been used for many years and is considered very effective against acne.

Salicylic acid is a form of Beta Hydroxy acid that works by dissolving the protein that binds dead skin cells together. It then gently burns off that layer of dead skin to encourage the production of new skin cells. It also has the effect of unclogging and cleaning out the pores so that oils and dirt don’t become trapped and lead to an acne outbreak.

You can find salicylic acid acne treatments in any health and beauty section. It is a common ingredient in skin creams, gels, lotions and toners. You can even purchase a more potent formula of purer salicylic acid from online retailers, but it is a good idea to start out with the milder formulas and see how your skin reacts before you buy stronger formulas.

Cautions & Warnings

If you are considering a product with this in it, here are some important cautions you need to be aware of:

  • You should know that salicylic acid is very harsh on the skin. Everybody reacts differently, but if you have sensitive skin or dry skin than salicylic acid may not be right for you.
  • You should also know that you cant use other medications containing Benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, or alcohol while using a salicylic acid based product because doing so would be too harsh on your skin.
  • You should make a point of wearing sunscreen if you choose a Salicylic acid treatment because it will make you more sensitive to the sun.
  • Because studies in animals have shown that salicylic acid is absorbed in to the mothers skin and can potentially cause birth defects (in high doses), pregnant and nursing moms should ask a doctor prior to use.
